Get Started as an eBay Seller

Getting started as an eBay seller is simple and quick. Follow these easy steps to get started with your eBay home business:

Register Your Username

When you are ready to take the plunge into your own eBay home business, head over to eBay.com and register your username. You should pick a username that matches the business you want to get started in. Don’t worry if you change your business inventory or your mind later on – eBay allows you to change your username whenever you want, as many times as you want, without losing your feedback rating or reputation.

Sign Up As A Seller

Once your username is registered, you’ll need to set up your selling account with eBay. Simply click on the selling tab on eBay’s website, and you’ll be prompted to fill in information such as your mailing address for your business, and your PayPal information. You may also be required to plug in a bank account or credit card number. This isn’t so eBay can charge you for signing up; eBay has a listing fee and a final value fee on all auctions for sellers, so your eBay fees every month will be charged to your bank account or credit card, unless you specify otherwise.

Prepare Your Items

Get together the items you plan on listing. Make sure that if they’re brand new, everything that should be with the item is with it. If it’s a used item, take note of anything that is missing, and clean the item thoroughly. Once you’ve finished, take photographs of your items with a digital camera. Upload the pictures, and create descriptions for each one. These should be as detailed as humanly possible, listing every single defect the item may have, including missing parts, broken pieces, stains, discolorations, and anything else. Add in if the item comes from a home with smokers or pets to alert your buyers with allergies.

List Your Auctions

Once the photographs and the descriptions are ready to go, it’s time to set up your auctions. Under the selling tab, you will see an option for listing a new auction. Fill in the keywords for your auction, and the next page will give you the chance to fill in the description, add photographs, a title, and the starting price for the auction. When this is all filled out, submit the auction to get it listed on eBay.

That’s it! You’ve officially listed your first auction on eBay. Now, all that’s left to do is watch the bids come in. When your auction is over, and you’ve collected the money, remember to ship the item out as soon as possible, and leave feedback for your buyer. Congratulations you now have a new home based business on eBay.

Now isn’t that easy?

Home Based Business Tax Deductions

Home-based businesses are eligible for tax deductions just like brick and mortar businesses. You can get tax deductions for the following:

Traveling Expenses: If you travel by air for any business related to work, then you should definitely save your tickets or receipts, by claiming those expenses as tax deductions. If you are using your car for your business needs, then you can also deduct those expenses, including your fuel bills, repair bills, insurance and loan repayments. You will also need to maintain a mileage log of your car. These expenses will, however be permissible only when you use your car for business purposes only and not for your personal purposes. Even if you travel out of town for your business, then you can still deduct your hotel room and meal expenses. However, if you take your family along, then you will only be able to claim for yourself and not for your family. If you take any business associate to lunch or dinner, then these too can be claimed, provided you have saved your restaurant bills.

Telephone Expenses: In order to avoid confusion, while filing your taxes, it is better to install a separate phone line in your home or purchase a separate mobile phone that caters only to your business. You can then claim these phone bills as tax deductions.

Home Mortgage Interest: You can also deduct the corresponding amount of your home mortgage interest that you are currently using as your home-based office. The space utilized by your office will be compared with the total size of your home and the corresponding percentage will be allowed as a deduction. According to the IRS, the office space must be used regularly and exclusively for business purposes

Business Supplies and Equipment: If you are using a computer or a copier for your business, then you can also claim such expenses as deductions. Accounting software packages, anti-virus programs or any other computer programs along with recurring expenses, such as computer stationary, postage or other expenses can also be included in tax deductions. If you are using an Internet service, then you can also claim these expenses as tax deductions. Make a point to save all your receipts in order to legitimize your claims.

Insurance Premiums: You can also deduct your health insurance premiums, if you are running your home business on a sole proprietorship basis. However, you will not be allowed to do the same for your family members, unless they are also employed in your business. You can also deduct half the amount of your personal social security payments.

It would be better, if you just save all the bills and receipts of all your expenses incurred in your home based business and submit them to your tax consultant, who can then sort them and claim them under the correct deduction heading. You should not have any problems with the tax authorities, if your tax deductions are genuine and you have the necessary bills to back your claims.

Maintain accurate financial records of all expenses, as well as income, throughout the year so they will be readily available when preparing your tax return. For example, if you plan to deduct mileage or any expenses related to use of your vehicle (which can include tolls and parking fees, state property tax and loan interest), keep a log in the vehicle and use it to note odometer readings at the start and end of each trip as well as the trip’s purpose.

The main problem in attracting clients towards your home-based business could be the manner in which home-based businesses are perceived in general. Your clients might not be right in assuming that by running your business from your home, you are not very serious about your business, but you can change their way of thinking by putting the following points into action:

Choose A Professional Sounding Business Name. In order to get off to a good start, make sure that your business name sounds professional. Use your business name on your business cards, letterhead and advertisements in order to create a professional impression on your clientele.

Dedicate A Specific Area Of Your Home For Your Business. Make sure to separate your office from the rest of your home. If possible, allocate a corner room with a separate entrance or your garage as your office. You do not want your clients walking through your kitchen or your children’s room when they visit your office. Your office should have appropriate tables, chairs, and other office equipment to give it a professional look.

Have a Dedicated Phone Line for Your Business. Make sure that you have a separate phone line or a mobile phone for your home-based business. This will prevent you from receiving personal calls during your office hours and allow you to concentrate on your business. Ensure that your office is isolated from normal home noises. Install an answering machine to handle calls if you are busy. Answer the phone in a professional manner.

Have A Professional Website. If you are promoting your business through a Website, then your website should be professionally designed. Your domain name and your email address should reflect your business name instead of your personal name. Answer your email in a timely manner and make sure you ship your items quickly.

Do Not Make Excuses. If you are unable to finish a customers order in a timely manner then do not make excuses citing problems at home. This will only project an impression that you are overwhelmed and your clients might not appreciate such unprofessional behavior. Try to handle your household affairs after your work is completed.
You must work extremely hard to create a professional image for your home-based business so that you can convince your potential clients that your home-based business is as good as, if not better than a brick and mortar office.

OK, get busy now!
