Power sellers are listed under one of the five power selling tiers: bronze, silver, gold, platinum, and titanium.  Each tier requires you to meet the monthly minimum sales for at least the past three months to get in on that tier.  For each tier, the respective minimums are: $1,000, $3,000, $10,000, $25,000, and $150,000.  Obviously, $150,000 a month is a hard number to hit, but you can make a respectable $3,000 a month through selling on eBay with ease, and enjoy power seller status at the silver level.

Power seller status isn’t focused on just your sales, of course – high quality customer service is the most important criterion for become a power seller.  Power sellers consistently provide their buyers with high quality customer service that goes above and beyond the call of duty to keep their buyers happy.  This level of customer service may seem rather daunting, especially if you’re only looking to make a little bit of extra cash to use for spending money, but it’s really not all that difficult.  It’s the little things that count, like the extra e-mail thanking your customers for their loyalty, a handwritten note in every package telling buyers you appreciate their business, or throwing in an extra something small with your items to let buyers know that you appreciate them.

These little extras are all you need to get yourself that coveted power seller status.  With a little bit of work on your part, you too can enjoy the benefits of becoming a power seller, and watch your eBay business boom.

Getting started as an eBay seller is simple and quick. Follow these easy steps to get started with your eBay home business:

Register Your Username

When you are ready to take the plunge into your own eBay home business, head over to eBay.com and register your username. You should pick a username that matches the business you want to get started in. Don’t worry if you change your business inventory or your mind later on – eBay allows you to change your username whenever you want, as many times as you want, without losing your feedback rating or reputation.

Sign Up As A Seller

Once your username is registered, you’ll need to set up your selling account with eBay. Simply click on the selling tab on eBay’s website, and you’ll be prompted to fill in information such as your mailing address for your business, and your PayPal information. You may also be required to plug in a bank account or credit card number. Prepare Your Items

Get together the items you plan on listing. Make sure that if they’re brand new, everything that should be with the item is with it. If it’s a used item, take note of anything that is missing, and clean the item thoroughly. Once you’ve finished, take photographs of your items with a digital camera. Upload the pictures, and create descriptions for each one. These should be as detailed as humanly possible, listing every single defect the item may have, including missing parts, broken pieces, stains, discolorations, and anything else. Add in if the item comes from a home with smokers or pets to alert your buyers with allergies.

List Your Auctions

Once the photographs and the descriptions are ready to go, it’s time to set up your auctions. Under the selling tab, you will see an option for listing a new auction. Fill in the keywords for your auction, and the next page will give you the chance to fill in the description, add photographs, a title, and the starting price for the auction. When this is all filled out, submit the auction to get it listed on eBay.

That’s it! You’ve officially listed your first auction on eBay. Now, all that’s left to do is watch the bids come in. When your auction is over, and you’ve collected the money, remember to ship the item out as soon as possible, and leave feedback for your buyer. Congratulations you now have a new home based business on eBay.

Business Supplies and Equipment: If you are using a computer or a copier for your business, then you can also claim such expenses as deductions. Accounting software packages, anti-virus programs or any other computer programs along with recurring expenses, such as computer stationary, postage or other expenses can also be included in tax deductions. If you are using an Internet service, then you can also claim these expenses as tax deductions. Make a point to save all your receipts in order to legitimize your claims.    

Insurance Premiums: You can also deduct your health insurance premiums, if you are running your home business on a sole proprietorship basis. However, you will not be allowed to do the same for your family members, unless they are also employed in your business. You can also deduct half the amount of your personal social security payments.

It would be better, if you just save all the bills and receipts of all your expenses incurred in your home based business and submit them to your tax consultant, who can then sort them and claim them under the correct deduction heading. You should not have any problems with the tax authorities, if your tax deductions are genuine and you have the necessary bills to back your claims.

Considerations:
Maintain accurate financial records of all expenses, as well as income, throughout the year so they will be readily available when preparing your tax return. For example, if you plan to deduct mileage or any expenses related to use of your vehicle (which can include tolls and parking fees, state property tax and loan interest), keep a log in the vehicle and use it to note odometer readings at the start and end of each trip as well as the trip’s purpose.
